Kid A, Kid B is a madcap 40-minute dance work, a musical Romeo and Juliet stitched together by many different songs from many different genres. It’s also one of the most delightful shows I’ve seen at the Fringe Festival’s Citadel venue, and one you can’t miss.

The choreographer says in the program that she took her inspiration from Shakespeare’s classic love story, but the work’s plot and artistic style clearly borrow, if not lift wholesale, from the 2012 movie Moonrise Kingdom: the summer camp setting, the uniforms, the secret love story, the Benjamin Britten. Though it’s technically the plot of Romeo and Juliet, and pays homage to Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation of the tale, Wes Anderson is the muse for this show.

But you could hardly have a better muse, so, quite frankly, who cares. Kid A, Kid B is hilarious, sweet, the musical selection wonderful, the choreography impressive in both its cleverness and complexity, and the whole thing’s kind of moving- the marshmallow dance (that’s about the best way I can describe it) set to Schubert’s Ave Maria is oddly affecting, and you’ll have to see it yourself to understand why. But the performers are not just skilled dancers; they’re incredibly capable physical comedians too, adding another level of fun that had the audience laughing throughout.

Kid A, Kid B is a light-hearted, incredibly fun dance piece, one that never takes itself seriously and explicitly steers away from seriousness before it can get too close. Where else are you going to see two people doing the robot to the Magnetic Fields song ‘The Book of Love’? Nowhere else, that’s for sure, and I can’t believe it took so long for someone to do it.
